Estate Coin Appraisals for Executors

If you're settling an estate that includes coins, paper money or bullion, you'll need to know what it's worth. We prepare written, itemized appraisals of coin collections for executors, families and estate attorneys.

Why executors need one

Pennsylvania's inheritance-tax return reports the estate's property at its value on the date of death. The return is due nine months after death, with a 5% discount if the tax is paid within three months. A coin collection is hard to value on your own: price guides give wide ranges, and the difference between a coin's metal value and its collector value can be many times over. Your estate attorney can tell you exactly what the return requires.

What you receive

  • A signed, itemized written appraisal: each coin or lot, its description and grade, and its fair market value.
  • The valuation date, usually the date of death.
  • How we reached each value: recent auction records for comparable coins, and metal prices on the valuation date.
  • A PDF plus a printed copy for the estate file.

Values change

An appraisal reports what the collection was worth on one date. Coin and precious-metal prices move, sometimes quickly, so the same collection can be worth more or less later on. An appraisal isn't a standing price or an offer to buy.

We're also a buyer

We buy coins, and we say so up front. The appraisal is independent of any offer, and the estate is free to sell to anyone. If the family later decides to sell and asks us, we'll make a separate offer at current market prices.
